Napoleon ist das 1927 uraufgeführte, zum Teil zerstörte und in langjähriger Arbeit rekonstruierte Filmfragment von Abel Gance über den „Retter des Volkes“ Napoleon Bonaparte. Die ursprünglich neunstündige Fassung sollte einer von sechs Teilen sein und handelt deshalb von Napoleons Schulzeit bis zum Italienfeldzug 1796. Die rekonstruierte Fassung aus dem Jahr 1981 wurde durch eine illustrierende Musik von Francis Ford Coppolas Vater Carmine ergänzt. Wegen des Einsatzes der „entfesselten“ Kamera und eines der ersten Breitwandverfahren, der Polyvision gilt das Mammutwerk bis heute als Vorreiter vieler erst später entwickelter Filmtechniken und hat einen hohen filmhistorischen Wert. It's a great film and even greater in its director's cut five-hour version. I saw the shorter, four-hour version, and it didn't particularly appeal to me in terms of storytelling. Napoleon's fate is quite well-known, and it probably won't surprise you that much. It's well-shot, with excellent build-up in some scenes, but here the form is simply more important. Some of the cross-fades are simply excellent, as well as the use of color filters. The film is beautifully shot and some of the shots are breathtaking. As a film lover, I was amazed, but as a lover of stories, I wasn't quite as impressed.
