Enid und Rebecca sind "beste Freundinnen" die gerade ihren Schulabschluß hinter sich haben. Gemeinsam sind sie von dem kleinstädtischem und spießbürgerlichem Leben um sie herum nur angeödet. Umgeben von kleingeistigen Normalos und Fast Food Kultur wissen sie dass sie eines nicht wollen, nämlich diesen grotesken "Amerikanischen Traum". Während Rebecca einen Job annimmt muss Enid noch einen Kunstkurs wiederholen, die gemeinsame Wohnung muss warten. Enid antwortet aus Spass auf eine Kontaktanzeige und lernt den etwas seltsamen Seymour kennen. Eigentlich wollte sie sich nur an einem idiotischen Verzweifelten belustigen. Sie stellt aber fest, er ist das genaue Gegenteil von allem was sie so sehr hasst. (Advanced Filmverleih)

Comedy? Just a hint. Rather, it’s a sad drama about a selfish teenager who goes from nothing to nothing and manages to ruin her boyfriend's relationship with her self-centeredness. Zwigoff's sensitive direction and the excellent actors make this film a must-see. But I don’t see it as five stars.

A prequel to American Beauty. Sensitively made, often very self-aware, but this adolescent romp, for all its under-the-skin atmosphere, doesn't entertain nearly as much as its two years older and more mature sibling.

An unnecessarily overrated film that can't decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama, and ends up as a bitter story about the classic search for life paths. Unfortunately, almost everything that you see here you've already seen at least once before. An interesting loser, a bored and cynical duo of girls, a supporting role of a simple top student, and a class full of weird creatures with artistic inclinations. If there's something first-class about it, it's Steve Buscemi, whom was believable for me in everything, from his neurotic outbursts to his love for records. It's a pity that the ending is somewhat calculatedly inconclusive; the rest is pleasant but quickly forgettable.
