Yuki wurde von Ihrer Mutter Sayo nur aus einem Grund geboren: Rache. Während politischer Unruhen zuvor wurde Sayos Familie brutal von fünf Gewaltverbrechern ermordet. Die Verzweiflung trieb sie zum Mord an einem ihrer Schänder, doch musste sie dafür ins Zuchthaus. Bestärkt von Hass und von Rache getrieben, hurte sie mit Gefangenen und Wärtern um ein Kind, ein Werkzeug ihrer Rache, zu gebären. Sayo stirbt noch bei Yukis Geburt, nicht jedoch ohne Maßnahmen veranlasst zu haben. Gedrillt von einem Kriegermönch wird Yuki 20 lange Jahre in der Kunst des Tötens unterrichtet: “You have a destiny; forget joy, forget sorrow, forget love and hate, forget everything except vengeance!” Aus Yuki wird Lady Snowblood und die Welt färbt sich rot. A beautifully structured film where you immediately realize from the beginning that it was a clear inspiration for Kill Bill. There are even the same scenes here, sometimes literally, just with the difference that in the American film, they aren't played by Japanese actors. Tarantino wasn't even the one who came up with fountains of blood; this film had already pioneered that. It was more than just inspiration. The story's pretty similar, too. But Kill Bill is more modern and more action-packed. Lady Snowblood maintains a very high standard and literally dazzles. Its age of over 40 years definitely doesn't show. I wish the manga that inspired the screenplay would be released here.
