Vincent doit mourir

A dense psychological thriller with an original concept. The story revolves around Vincent, a very ordinary guy who works in an office, but all of a sudden he is attacked by random people who want to murder him and he has to adapt to a new lifestyle. Danger lurks at every turn and he learns that there are more like him. Vincent is literally living a nightmare where no one can be trusted – even small children will want to kill him. It's clever, it's pulled off by the lead actor's performance, it's got quite a disturbing atmosphere, it's entertaining, and the ending builds to a finale of apocalyptic proportions that was pleasantly gritty. A French metaphor for violence in society and I enjoyed it. It's a shame the film leaves questions unanswered, I certainly wouldn't be angry for a twist here. 75% (17.04.2024)

Eine verrückt einfache Idee, aus der die Autoren etwas Unglaubliches gemacht haben – eine psychologische Studie eines Menschen in einer absurden Situation, inszeniert als gesellschaftliche Satire mit einem postapokalyptischen Ausmaß. Ohne Fantasy-Elemente und große Szenen, obwohl der Film hauptsächlich draußen spielt. Manche Leute greifen Vincent einfach grundlos an. Und sehr aggressiv. Die immer stärker werdende und unverständliche Gefahr, die sich steigernde Paranoia, die unausweichliche Isolation. Ein guter Film für wenig Geld. [Sitges FF] (09.10.2023)

Vincent Must Die ist die Geschichte eines verschlossenen Mannes mittleren Alters, der plötzlich Opfer brutaler Angriffe von Bekannten oder Passanten wird. Was als recht komische Prämisse beginnt, eskaliert allmählich zu neuen Ebenen. Mehr zu verraten, wäre diesem Film ein Bärendienst, da es sehr unterhaltsam ist zu sehen, wie er mit jedem verstrichenen Moment neue Richtungen einschlägt. (21.10.2023)

Einfache Metapher über Gewalt in der Gesellschaft und den Unsinn von Konflikten, die zu Beginn zwar auf eine aufregende Fahrt mit Elementen schwarzen Humors hindeutet, aber letztendlich immer nur im Leerlauf fährt und eher ein langsames Erzähltempo bevorzugt. Einige Szenen, vor allem in der ersten Hälfte, können amüsant sein, aber dann beginnt der Film, in seine eigene Inkonsistenz zu versinken und es entstehen viele unbeantwortete Fragen. Im Laufe der Zeit weicht die Handlung von der Notwendigkeit, sich an die neuen Regeln anzupassen, die für das Überleben in einer Welt erforderlich sind, in der sich Gewalt wie eine Pestepidemie verbreitet, auf eine bizarren romantische Linie, was de facto ein wenig willkommener Schritt weg von dem Interessantesten ist. A new addition to my favourite sub-genre of films in which the main character loses his security of being as a result of an inexplicable phenomenon and has to cope with it somehow. They have managed to turn a great idea into a functional film for little money, brimming with a paranoid atmosphere and an escalating sense of hopelessness. There aren't many "horror" scenes as such, but the "horror" at its core is stronger and more impressive than the vast majority of pure genre films. The first half is better than the second half, and I agree with the criticisms of others that the film is not very successful in finding its footing at the end. (20.04.2024)

The French answer to It Follows, Vincent Must Die serves more as a metaphor for societal violence than a full-throttle horror, though it doesn’t shy away from brutal moments when needed. The meticulously crafted beginning slows down with a sudden change in location, yet it still delivers some memorable scenes along the way. This high-concept film is engaging, though it has its flaws and seems unsure about how to wrap things up. Despite this, it’s a movie that will resonate with me for a while. (11.10.2023)
