The Sacrifice Game

The Sacrifice Game ist ein sehr künstlicher Versuch eines angeblich coolen Horrorfilms aus dem Jahr 1971. Alles wirkt so studiomäßig sauber und poliert, dass man keinen Moment glauben wird, dass man echte Umgebungen, echte Charaktere und echten Schrecken sieht. Fügt man dazu das tragische Overacting der meisten beteiligten Schauspieler hinzu, wird es einem vorkommen wie eine Amateur-Aufführung, die auf Film übertragen wurde. Dies ist ein Film, der höchstens als Lückenfüller in der Videothek eines zweitklassigen Streaming-Dienstes geeignet ist, wo er schließlich auch landen wird. Dieses Werk im Rahmen eines Festivals für Genre-Filme zu sehen, neben Werken, die mit einem vergleichbaren oder sogar deutlich niedrigeren Budget wahre Wunder vollbringen können und mit ihrem Retro-Setting realistisch wirken können, ist für diese aufgesetzte und nervige Belanglosigkeit eindeutig ein Todesurteil für das Publikum. An hour and a half of lethargic acting performances in a film where none of the characters really knows what they are doing and even less is known by the director, who takes a dull and unimaginative approach to the potentially interesting story of satanic murderers who break into a girls’ boarding school. There is zero atmosphere, suspense or period stylisation and the sporadic attempts at humour are cringe-worthy. I don’t understand the positive responses from overseas critics. (08.10.2023)

The Sacrifice Game fails miserably in recreating the convincing 70s aesthetic, with every shot marred by an obnoxious, sterile digital look. The demonic storyline is laughable, populated by annoying and weak characters, and nothing about it works. I rank this movie among the worst I've seen in recent years, just a notch above Black Christmas, which it unfortunately reminded me of more than once (ugh!). (11.10.2023)
