Spider

Ich hasse Spinnen. Diese Spinne liebe ich aber. Ralph Fiennes bestätigt, dass er in der Lage ist, alles darzustellen. Wenn seine Figur seltsam ist, ist es für ihn noch besser (und für uns auch). Beim ersten Mal hat Spider vier starke Sterne bekommen, beim zweiten Mal fünf. Und es hat mich gar nicht gestört, dass ich die Pointe kannte. Eine Bekannte von mir hat gesagt, dass dieser Film wie Eis ist: Kalt, aber verdammt gut. (31.10.2009)

"Spider" is a classic Cronenberg film, but it already shows significant hints of what we see in his current work. Minimum gore and maximum human mind, which has reached a state that cannot be considered normal. Cronenberg still maintains his effort to shock, although in this case it is already through the story, not what we see. At times, he is open, which is simply his motto, but on the other hand, he is more oriented towards the inner soul, not the inner body. However, the truth is that this more accessible style suits him as well, which is no less depressing than his bloody film beginnings in some aspects. (22.11.2013)

Silence, depression, and muteness, and yet on top of that, half of the things are actually said. There is nothing so exhausting as watching an hour and a half of a fatally simplified story with only two features – Ralph Fiennes gaping and half-hearted flashbacks. Not even a mesmerizing movie star could have brought me closer to David Cronenberg's study of a damaged mind. No intimacy to speak of, in an unnecessary form. (07.04.2006)
