Vietnam, 1922: Das Land ist seit einem halben Jahrhundert unter französischer Kolonialherrschaft. Die Last der hohen Steuern, der Enteignung und Zwangsarbeit ruft die vietnamesischen Bauern zum bewaffneten Widerstand auf, der von den französischen Besatzern mit willkürlicher Beraubung, Internierungslagern und Exekutionen beantwortet wird. Es wird eine Eliteeinheit an vietnamesischen Undercover-Agenten gegründet, um die vietnamesischen Rebelleneinheiten zu zerstören. Zu der gehört auch Le Van Cuong, der jedoch mehr und mehr in Zweifel gerät, welche Seite die richtige ist: die des verräterischen Handlangers oder die seines eigenen Volkes. An absolute martial arts hell with a decent romantic story, which moved and cut me all the time. There's plenty of action and it's one of the best in the genre. Very impressive and gritty choreography using multiple martial arts at once, in everything from capoeira to muay thai and kung fu. The main villain is charismatic, has bones of iron perhaps, and the likeable protagonists are impossible not to root for. Suspenseful, fast-paced, brilliantly shot. It's great on a silver platter. 90%
