“Ich habe keinen schwulen Sohn!” Mary Griffith, eine streng religiöse Mutter in den USA Anfang der 80er, kann sich mit der Homosexualität ihres Sohnes nicht abfinden und tut alles, um ihren Sohn von seiner “Krankheit” zu “heilen”. Sie ist der festen Überzeugung, Bobbys Schwulsein ist eine Sünde. In Hoffnung auf die Anerkennung seiner Mutter tut Bobby alles, was sie von ihm verlangt. Als er jedoch merkt, dass er sich nicht ändern kann, machen die Zurückweisung und der Liebesentzug seiner Mutter ihn zunehmend depressiv und führen letzten Endes zu seinem Selbstmord. Mary macht sich auf die schmerzhafte Suche nach dem “Warum?” und beginnt, ihren Glauben in Frage zu. Als sie endlich erkennt, dass Bobbys Homosexualität weder Sünde noch freie Wahl ist, engagiert sie sich zunehmend für die Rechte von Homosexuellen. (Verleiher-Text)

For me, one of the most compelling and powerful films dealing with gay issues. I have to say at the outset that you can tell right away that this is a TV movie, but that's not a bad thing at all, it's even the ideal format for such dramas. From start to finish, the film is full of emotion and reflection, and all the elements play to the film's strengths, from the technical aspects (the cinematography, the cuts between the two time periods, and the music) to the strong script to the convincing performances; Sigourney Weaver once again proves that she is a great actress. A film that, despite its small budget, is perfect in virtually every way. It highlights how some among us cannot cope with the difference that is ingrained in human nature. I applaud and give it both thumbs up!
