In einer feudalen, mittelalterlichen Welt ist Raiden (Clive Owen) ein Mann mit dunkler Vergangenheit, als ihn Lord Bartok (Morgan Freeman) aufnimmt und zum Kommandanten seiner Garde von Rittern macht. Da sein Herr selbst kinderlos blieb, lässt er Raiden sogar die allerhöchste Ehre zuteilwerden und setzt ihn als seinen Erben ein. Sein Glück währt allerdings nicht lange, denn der Gesandte des Kaisers, Gezza Mott (Aksel Hennie), erniedrigt und ächtet Raiden, wodurch ihm und seinen Rittern alle Titel und die Lebensgrundlage entzogen werden. Aber als der paranoide Mott sämtliche Spuren von Bartoks Clan und Erbe zu tilgen sucht, geht er allerdings zu weit und ein blutiger Kampf um Ehre und Moral beginnt... (KSM/NEW KSM)

I was looking forward to it so much, and in the end it was only a three. The film can't be denied an interesting story, nice visuals, fine actors (Clive Owen is great here), but I am not too happy with the pace and the action. It's quite unbalanced, the action is mostly at the beginning and at the end, which is a shame, not that I was bored during the film, but I missed some moment that would have kicked up to a four stars. A strong three 65%

Such an altogether rather well done Western/Eastern mashup, basically 47 Rōnin as a Western. The acting certainly isn't bad, but given that I was pretty clear on how it was going to turn out (what Japanophile wouldn't know that, either), some things didn't surprise me at all, and I found it kind of clunky/sloppy here and there. Just a passable revenge movie, but lacking that extra something, a certain charm that would make you sit and gape. It's beautiful how Ihara tries to speak flawless English, he speaks so beautifully slow and choppy.

Interesting actors, but considering that it's a strangely medieval drama about revenge, I expected something different than a lengthy, pseudo-psychological game, which has a quite clear outcome. Then you have to watch everything with a good dose of pathos.
