Im normalen Leben sind sie Banker, Musiker, Mechaniker oder auch Lehrer, doch wenn ein Spiel von FC Spartak Moscow ansteht, dann werden sie zu Hooligans. Wer einmal ein Teil »Der Firma« ist, für den gibt es kein zurück mehr. Die Hingabe zum Verein und die Treue zu den Mitstreitern thront über allem - sei es die Liebe zu einer Frau oder dem eigenen Leben. Basierend auf wahren Ereignissen wirft KICKING OFF einen ungeschönten Blick auf die russische Hooliganszene mitsamt all ihren Regeln und Gepflogenheiten. Verpackt in harschen Bildern schickt sich der Film dabei an, die englische Konkurrenz wie GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS und THE FOOTBALL FACTORY weit hinter sich zurückzulassen. Noch nie zuvor wurde die Hooliganszene so realistisch und kompromisslos dargestellt - was nicht nur in Russland für einen hanffesten Skandal sorgte. KICKING OFF ist ein Film wie ein Faustschlag. Based on the reviews, I was expecting a hooligans mêlée and one battle after another, and considering the fact that it's Russia, I was expecting twice as much. But Kicking Off is the exact opposite and relies more on the story around the central gang than the hooligans skirmishing in the woods, and it’s surprisingly quite entertaining and iconic, so I have no problem with it. However, when I rewatch that fight, which should be the main asset of films like this, I want to laugh at how incredibly second-rate, boring and awkward it's portrayed, there are almost no shots, no blood, nothing. Story 3/5, but the rest is not worth talking about. Total rubbish.
