Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wächst in England ein Junge in äußerst ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf, der später zum Weltstar werden sollte - Charlie Chaplin. Nach ersten Tourneen in Europa wandert Chaplin (Robert Downey Jr.) in die USA aus und macht durch seine erfrischenden Slapsticks Hollywood auf sich aufmerksam. Bald darauf (1914) dreht er seinen ersten Kurzfilm in der gerade entstehenden Traumfabrik und begeistert dort ein breites Publikum. Über Nacht wird er zum gefeierten Filmstar. Chaplin kommt zu großem Wohlstand, gründet ein Studio und wird darüber hinaus auch Produzent. Alles scheint sich perfekt für ihn zu entwickeln, doch mit seinem bissigen Humor und seinen zahlreichen Frauengeschichten macht er sich im prüden Amerika nicht nur Freunde. 1952 wird ihm schließlich nach einer Europareise die Rückkehr nach Amerika verweigert. A meticulous reconstruction of the famous comedian's life. Richard Attenborough tells the story through flashbacks, detailing his impoverished childhood, peak fame, and personal troubles and entanglements with women. The opening ten minutes are very strongly reminiscent of the beginning of Once Upon a Time in America with their retro atmosphere, melodic music and meticulous production design, and although Chaplin entertains a little less after the film bridges into the middle section, where we primarily see the successes and all manner of romantic adventures, Attenborough still maintains a high standard, strong narrative value and artfully composes a tribute to the legend.

Without a doubt Downey's best role and one of the best biopic performances of all time. His transformation is perfect. Great, Mr Attenborough, great, and that cast of supporting actors – what a stellar cast, let me tell you.
