Young Christian Ferro (Andrea Carpenzano) is a born striker and the pride of A.S. Roma. The cosseted football star is always up for anything, but the excesses in the celebrity’s private life are starting to jeopardise a promising career. A radical decision from the club president isn’t long in coming, and personal tutor Valerio (Stefano Accorsi) appears on the scene facing a seemingly impossible task. Talented Leonardo D’Agostini’s fine debut, an intelligent comedy that goes behind the scenes of one of the best loved football clubs, will delight even those who think ball sports are ridiculous. Ich bewunderte den Menschen, der nach der Vorführung des Champions am Ende der Diskussion diese Komödie als "reichhaltige Geschichte, die sich von den simplen Hollywood-Komödien abhebt" bezeichnete. Dabei passt The Champion genau in dieses Schema und erfüllt klassische Handlungsklischees ohne jegliche Innovationen und Überraschungen. Das mag den meisten genügen, aber mir erschien es auch für eine leichte, gedankenlose Komödien-Ablenkung irgendwie zu wenig.

A great idea from the Italians — telling the story of a talented footballer who doesn’t realize he actually has more going on upstairs than he thinks. His young mind is just too caught up in Italian lira to notice. I really enjoyed it; it’s visually appealing, and his mentor brings the right amount of tough love. Overall, it’s a solid dramedy with a nice Hollywood vibe, but the ending earned it that extra fourth star.
