A great example of capturing the realism of Italy during World War II. At times, one wonders how this could have been filmed in fascist Italy at all because it doesn't paint a flattering picture of a strong nation. On the contrary, it's as if the country were weak, and the characters portrayed here are equally weak. This leads to them being victims of their own weakness.
